Sales tax is applied to price minus trade-in. Some states tax the full price, so adjust the rate to match. Estimates only, not an offer or financial advice.
* About the Fees field
Default $900 is an estimate for a typical dealer purchase (based on Virginia figures; fees vary by state), as of 2026-10-17. It is a $799 dealer processing fee (CarEdge 2026 average for Virginia, Edmunds lists a $899 median; some states cap this fee), plus the $15 DMV title fee and roughly $36 to $85 for registration and plates. Your dealer's buyer's order will differ, so edit it.
- Dealer processing (doc) fee: the dealer's charge for paperwork, titling and plates. It is dealer revenue, must be posted and listed on the buyer's order, and can be negotiated indirectly through the price.
- DMV title and registration: state fees to title the car and register it.
- Tag and plate fees: license plate costs, sometimes bundled with registration.
- Optional add-ons: extended warranty, GAP, paint protection and similar. Not required and not in the default. Add them to Fees if you plan to buy them.
Sales tax is separate. Sales and use tax varies by state; the calculator defaults to Virginia's 4.15%, so change it for your state, and Virginia counts the processing fee in the taxable amount. This calculator applies tax to price minus trade-in only, so raise the tax rate a little if you want to cover the fee. Check your state DMV.
